THE SUMMARY OF WEEK
Mobile phones are the success story of bridging the rural digital divide, bringing tangible economic benefits and acting as agents of social mobilization through improved communication. But what are the real challenges that face reaching rural areas, and what are some of today’s most beneficial applications that can help these rural communities, specifically regarding agriculture development?
This Forum examines the challenges that rural communities face in enhancing the benefits of mobile telephony, and looks at some examples of interesting initiatives and good outcomes from around the globe.

El FSM es un espacio de debate democrático de ideas, profundamiento de la reflexión, formulación de propuestas, cambio de experiencias y articulación de movimientos sociales, red, ongs y otras organizaciones de la sociedad civil que se oponen al neoliberalismo y al domínio del mundo por el capital y por cualquier forma de imperialismo. Después del primero encuentro mundial, realizado en 2001, se configuró como un proceso mundial permanente de búsqueda y construción de alternativas políticas neoliberales. Esta definición está en la Carta de Princípios, principal documento del FSM.

El Foro Social Mundial se caracteriza también por la pluralidad y por la diversidad, teniendo un carácter no confesional, no gubernamental y no partidario. Él se propone a facilitar la articulación, de forma descentralizada y en red, de entidades y movimientos engajados en acciones concretas, del nivel local al internacional, por la construción de un otro mundo, pero no pretende ser una instancia representativa de la sociedad civil mundial. El Foro Social Mundial no es una entidad ni una organización.
